Shoal Creek Student Family Connection - 6/30 Edition

Hi Families, here’s your “need-to-know” info for your Buya and Crash Students:
1. “Fun Fridays” Every Friday In July - Shoal Creek is starting a relationship with the Clayview Terrace Apartment complex on Church Rd. We are going to do 5 kid-centered fun events every Friday from 11:00am-1pm in July to build relationships that we hope lead to “Homework Huddles” in the Fall of this school year.

2.  BIG NEED for our friends at Mission Adelante!  We told Mission Adelante we’d find resources to get 20 HS students backpacks for the fall to help them with their school, and unfortunately so far, we haven’t been able to come up with any.
Would you think about being 1 of the 20 needed backpacks? If so, here’s a shopping list for you to pick up this weekend and bring with you on your day of serving:
  • 1 – backpack with a laptop sleeve (our students are issued laptops at school and can not take them home without a backpack with a laptop sleeve in it)
  • 1 – 2 inch binder
  • 1 – package of dividers
  • 2 – packages college ruled notebook paper
  • 2 – packages of #2 pencils
  • 1 – package of ink pens
  • 1 encouraging back-to-school message for the student receiving the backpack
Please message me BY THURSDAY if you can helpI
3. Special Plan for Buya and Crash Sunday Services for July 5th – Due to the amount of both volunteers and families out of town this Sunday July 5th, instead of having separately planned Buya and Crash services, we’re just going to open up The Attic for BOTH Buya and Crash students for BOTH services. We’ll have some snacks and hangout space set up and instead of doing anything “planned”, we’ll just stream the services live and provide a spot for any Buya or Crash student who’s still in town to hangout with each other for a low key, “just-for-fun” Sunday in The Attic (up the stairs across from the water fountains).

4. Crash Summer Small Group Times - Just a reminder, for this  summer small group session, times/places are:
  • Girls - Wednesdays, 7:30am, at Morning Day Cafe (on north side of Liberty Square)
  • Boys - This week, TONIGHT at 5:30pm-7pm, in the Underground at SC. (next week’s day/time will be announced similarly)
Here’s what’s available to students and how we communicate to student families weekly.
  1. Buya” program every Sunday, 9:30am and 11am in the Underground for all 6th-8th grade students.
  2. Crash program every Sunday, 11am only, in the Attic for 9th-12th grade students.
  3. Join the “Buya Parents” or the “Crash Parents” City groups if you want weekly info on upcoming events.

Why might prayer sometimes feel so ineffective?

"Before you know what to pray for and how to pray for it, you must become a particular kind of person...The scales must fall from your eyes and you must see clearly that no matter how great your earthly circumstances become, they can never bring you the lasting peace, happiness and consolation that are found in Christ. Unless you have that clearly in view, your prayers may go wrong...Unless at the very least we recognize this heart disorder and realize how much it distorts our lives, our prayers will be part of the problem, not an agent of healing...
...However, if we have made God our greatest love, and if knowing and pleasing him is our highest pleasure, it transforms both what and how we pray for a happy life."
-Timothy Keller, "Prayer"
We've all struggled with what prayer is and how to do it. Can you count how many times you've brushed prayer off as being pointless? Or have you been hurt by giving into the idea of prayer, pouring your soul out to a God that's supposed to be loving, but doesn't answer in any intelligible way? Is prayer real? Or just a self-induced therapy session that's about as effective as baby aspirin on a torn ACL?

Reading this significantly helps me see the concept of prayer in a different way. Reading this make me feel like I've been starting at the wrong spot in my attempts to pray. It opens me up to seeing that perhaps it's not God's fault that I don't see any answers to my prayers, but that it's my own disordered and misaligned heart and being that prevent me from seeing God's love and action in my life.

Perhaps the next time you pray, don't start with telling God what you want to happen. Start by telling God who you are and who you hope he can help you become.
